VDOT paving nearly 39 lane miles of Route 13 this summer

The Virginia Department of Transportation is moving forward with a series of 2026 paving projects covering nearly 39 lane miles of Route 13 in Accomack and Northampton counties.

VDOT information shows 30.86 lane miles of paving are in progress and another 7.72 lane miles are scheduled. Altogether, the work represents approximately 14 percent of the travel-lane pavement on the roughly 70-mile, four-lane Route 13 corridor on the Eastern Shore.

The projects cover approximately 19.29 miles when measured by the length of the individual northbound or southbound roadway segments.

Beginning in southern Northampton County, VDOT has scheduled the resurfacing of 7.72 southbound lane miles between Martins Siding Lane and Birdsnest Drive. The project extends from mile points 93.21 to 97.07.

Farther north, work is underway on 11.84 southbound lane miles beginning near Benjamin Street at the Shore Plaza Shopping Center and continuing to a point about half a mile south of Bayford Road. That section runs from mile points 98.03 to 103.95.

Another project covers 6.16 southbound lane miles between the beginning of the divided highway south of Wayside Drive and a pavement joint near Merry Cat Lane at the Accomack-Northampton county line. That work extends from mile points 105.70 to 108.78.

In Accomack County, paving is underway on 3.15 northbound lane miles from just south of Wachapreague Road to about four-tenths of a mile north of the Eastern Shore Community College entrance. The project runs from mile points 112.05 to 113.62.

Three additional southbound projects are underway farther north in Accomack County.

The first covers 2.3 lane miles between Evans Road and Metompkin Road, extending from mile points 123.82 to 124.97.

The next project continues from Metompkin Road to a point north of Dennis Drive. That section covers 4.46 lane miles between mile points 124.97 and 127.20.

The northernmost project begins about 250 feet north of where the divided highway ends at Nelsonia and continues to Beartown Road, where another divided section begins. It covers 2.95 southbound lane miles from mile points 129.51 to 130.99.

All seven projects are listed for completion in 2026.
