As Virginians prepare for July Fourth celebrations and events marking America’s 250th anniversary, the Virginia Department of Transportation is taking steps to help keep holiday traffic moving.

VDOT says many highway work zones will be suspended and temporary lane closures on interstates and other major roads will be lifted from noon Thursday, July 2, until noon Monday, July 6.

The travel accommodations are intended to help motorists heading to cookouts, fireworks displays and special events across the Commonwealth. Eastern Shore travelers using Route 13, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and other major routes are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time, especially during peak holiday periods.

VDOT says some semi-permanent work zones may remain in place, even though most temporary lane closures will be lifted. Drivers are encouraged to check travel conditions before leaving home.

VDOT’s free 511 Virginia app and website provide information on traffic, incidents, congestion, construction, traffic cameras, weather and electric vehicle charging stations. Motorists may also call 511 from any phone in Virginia for hands-free traffic information.

The 511 Virginia website also includes a Fourth of July travel trends map showing when interstate travel has historically been slowest during the holiday period. VDOT says the tool can help travelers avoid some of the busiest times on the road.

VDOT is also reminding drivers to travel safely by putting phones down, wearing seat belts, watching for pedestrians and cyclists, and using a designated driver if alcohol is part of holiday plans.

Drivers are also reminded to obey Virginia’s Move Over law. Motorists must move over one lane, if possible, for vehicles stopped on the roadside with flashing lights, flares or warning signs. If moving over is not possible, drivers should slow down and use caution.

Hazardous road conditions may be reported to VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center by calling 800-FOR-ROAD or visiting my.vdot.virginia.gov.
