VDOT lifts lane closures for Easter weekend travel

The Virginia Department of Transportation is preparing for increased holiday travel by suspending many highway work zones and reminding drivers to stay focused behind the wheel during the Easter weekend.

VDOT announced that temporary lane closures will be lifted on interstates and major roadways statewide from noon Friday, April 3 through noon Tuesday, April 7, in an effort to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.

Officials note that while most work zones will be suspended, some semi-permanent construction areas will remain in place, and motorists should continue to use caution. Travelers are encouraged to check VDOT travel advisories for the latest updates before heading out.

With April marking Distracted Driving Awareness Month, VDOT is also emphasizing the importance of safe driving habits. Drivers are urged to put phones away, enable “Do Not Disturb” mode, and avoid distractions such as eating, reaching for loose items, or tending to passengers while the vehicle is in motion.

VDOT also reminds motorists to properly secure children and pets before traveling and to move over or slow down when approaching emergency vehicles stopped along the roadside.
