While the snowfall across our has concluded, VDOT crews continue to work around the clock to address the state-maintained roadways. The sustained frozen temperatures through Thursday afternoon, combined with any remaining moisture on the roadways, may continue to impact travel, with the potential for slick or icy conditions. Motorists should continue to limit or delay non-essential travel this evening and through morning rush hour until conditions further improve.

Crews have been working in 12-hour shifts since Tuesday evening, moving snow off the roadways and spreading materials such as salt to melt the ice and snow and abrasives like sand to help provide traction on the interstates and state-maintained primary routes.

As crews continue to address the roadways, motorists who may encounter plowing and treatment operations should slow down and allow space for crews so they can safely and effectively work.

Locally, primary routes are in good shape. Travelers should expect ice in shady spots, but they are predominantly clear. Route 13 is clear from the Maryland line to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Crews were able to get to secondary roads this afternoon, only 40% of those have been addressed and are passable.

With temperatures not anticipated to rise above freezing until Thursday afternoon, icy conditions, most notably on overpasses, bridges and shaded areas prone to freezing first, may likely impact travel overnight and into Thursday morning.

VDOT will continue to monitor road surfaces, and crews will treat and address the roads as necessary over the next several days. Motorists should monitor the local forecasts and changing road conditions and be prepared to avoid travel as needed until conditions improve.
