Forecasters are warning residents of Virginia’s Eastern Shore to prepare for the possibility of a major winter storm this weekend, followed by a prolonged stretch of dangerously cold temperatures, according to the latest forecast discussion from the National Weather Service.

Meteorologists say confidence continues to increase that a significant winter storm will affect the region beginning Saturday and lasting into Sunday or early Monday. However, uncertainty remains high regarding precipitation type, timing, and exact impacts for Accomack and Northampton counties.

Forecasters say very cold Arctic air will be firmly in place as the storm develops. Temperatures on the Eastern Shore are expected to drop into the teens to lower 20s by Saturday morning, creating favorable conditions for wintry precipitation as Gulf moisture moves northward into the cold air mass. Forecast models indicate a strong upper-level pattern capable of producing a major winter storm, along with widespread precipitation.

What remains unclear is whether the Eastern Shore will see primarily snow, or a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain. Some forecast scenarios suggest an initial burst of snow followed by sleet or freezing rain, particularly closer to the coast, while others maintain a colder profile favoring mostly snow. Forecasters caution that precipitation type forecasts could change significantly as new data becomes available.

Current projections suggest precipitation could begin Saturday afternoon or evening, continuing through much of Sunday before tapering off Sunday night or early Monday. Snowfall probabilities have shifted north with recent forecasts, but officials say the Eastern Shore still faces the risk of impactful winter weather depending on the storm’s track and thermal profile.

In addition to the storm itself, forecasters are increasingly concerned about the cold that will follow. A strong Canadian high-pressure system is expected to settle over the region behind the storm, ushering in an extended period of below-freezing temperatures. Highs could remain below freezing for several days, with overnight lows potentially falling into the single digits. Wind chills could drop below zero, especially if significant snowfall occurs.

This prolonged cold could pose serious risks, particularly if power outages occur during or after the storm. Officials urge residents to prepare now by checking heating systems, ensuring access to emergency supplies, and making plans to protect pets, livestock, and vulnerable neighbors.

Forecasters also noted a low-confidence chance for a light wintry mix on Friday, though any precipitation ahead of the main system is expected to be minor with little to no accumulation.

The National Weather Service emphasized that while confidence in a major winter storm is growing, details remain uncertain. Eastern Shore residents are urged to closely monitor forecasts over the coming days and rely on official updates as the situation continues to evolve.
