Two women dead, three others injured in Monday morning series of shootings in Northampton

Two women were killed and three other people were injured during a series of shootings early Monday morning in Northampton County, according to Sheriff David L. Doughty Jr.

The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of shots fired at approximately 4:30 a.m. July 13 on Randall Circle in the Nassawadox area.

When deputies arrived, they encountered a man armed with a rifle. The suspect fired several rounds at two occupied patrol vehicles before fleeing the scene in another vehicle, Doughty said.

Deputies entered the residence and found a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. She was transported to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Investigators later discovered that one of the rounds fired at the patrol vehicles had struck a deputy’s ballistic vest.

At approximately 5 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received another call reporting that the suspect was heading toward Parallel Road in the Machipongo area.

Deputies and other officers responding to that location encountered the same man armed with a rifle, according to the release. The suspect was reportedly firing at two residences and at law enforcement officers.

As officers approached, several rounds were fired, striking the armed suspect. He was then taken into custody.

Two men and one woman were injured by the suspect’s gunfire at the Parallel Road location. Two of the three victims and the suspect were transported to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. From there, the two victims and the suspect were airlifted.

Investigators also determined that the same suspect had allegedly been involved in an earlier shooting on Seaside Road in the Nassawadox area. Deputies responding to that location found a second woman dead from gunshot wounds.

According to Sheriff Doughty, the name of the shooter is being withheld until charges are made and the names of the victims are being withheld until next of kin notification can be made.
