According to, two polls show incumbent Second District Congressman Scott Taylor leading Democratic challenger Elaine Luria. A Christopher Newport University poll taken between October 2 and October 10 shows that Taylor has a 7 point lead. A New York Times/Siena poll taken between September 26 and October first shows Taylor with an 8 point lead. The margin of error is 4 points so Taylor’s lead at this point is beyond that margin.

Taylor who was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, served as a Navy Seal and in the Virginia House of Delegates was elected to replace Congressman Scott Rigell in 2016.

The polls favor Taylor in spite the effort by Democrats to paint Taylor as responsible for forged signatures in the petition of Shaun Brown to appear on the ballot. Brown who is currently facing legal troubles unrelated to the race was defeated by Taylor in 2016. A state judge removed Brown’s name from the November ballot because of the forged signatures.

While the Democrats are also attacking Taylor for his vote in support of the American Health Care Act which Republicans passed in the House in 2017 to replace Obama Care, the Republicans are running ads suggesting that if elected Luria will be a puppet of Nancy Pelosi.  If the Democrats take over the House in January, Pelosi is expected to again be elected as Speaker.
