At the annual Eggs and Issues breakfast last week, the main conversation centered around tourism. Northampton County Administrator Charlie Kolakowski mentioned that some of the tourism revenue the county receives could be used to help find an event site. Kolakowski explained that the property currently used for Chamberfest will likely not be available indefinitely. He also said that Northampton would like to explore the viability of an event venue that could attract tourists year-round, not just during the summer months.
Accomack Board member Robert Crockett replied that both counties have a combined population of around 45,000, making the creation of such a venue extremely challenging. Crockett also pointed out that there would likely be pushback, referencing the controversy surrounding the Town of Onancock’s decision to build a much smaller concert venue at the Historic Onancock School. This project has sparked heated discussions, he noted. Crockett also mentioned that even Virginia Beach finds it difficult to fully utilize their venue assets.
Crockett said he looks to the Tourism Commission and the Chamber of Commerce for leadership on these matters.
He added, “We are just a board and not experts on tourism.”
