Three Republicans from Fairfax County are competing for the chance to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Mark Warner in November.

Warner, Virginia’s senior senator and a former governor, is seeking a fourth term. But first, Republican voters will choose their nominee in the August 4 primary. The candidates are Kim Farington, Bert Mizusawa and David Williams.

Kim Farington, of Fairfax Station, is a certified public accountant and former federal executive. During a 33-year government career, she held financial leadership roles at the Departments of Defense and Agriculture, the Office of Personnel Management and the White House. She later served as chief financial officer for the First Responder Network Authority before founding a consulting firm focused on financial management and cybersecurity.

On the campaign trail, Farington says she wants to improve government transparency, increase accountability and support small businesses, noting they make up nearly all businesses in Virginia.

Bert Mizusawa is a retired Army major general and former senior federal official. His military and government career included service in Afghanistan, advising the CIA director, serving as deputy undersecretary of the Army and working for the Senate Armed Services Committee. A West Point graduate with degrees in law and public policy from Harvard, Mizusawa says his military experience would bring a strong national security perspective to the Senate. He has also received the endorsement of State Senator Bryce Reeves, who ended his own Senate campaign late last year.

David Williams, of Reston, served in both the Navy and Marine Corps before working at the State Department and the CIA. A Marine Corps Reserve lieutenant colonel, Williams completed two deployments to Iraq. His campaign focuses on strengthening the economy, supporting working families and promoting an America First agenda.

Early voting for the August 4 Republican primary is already underway. The final day to vote early in person is August 1. The winner will face Senator Mark Warner in Virginia’s general election on November 3.
