esva coastal storm

A developing storm is expected to impact our region tonight, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and a risk of flooding. According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, as the storm moves north, rain will intensify along the East Coast. Rain will be steady from beginning tonight through Wednesday, with minimal impacts expected. Some ponding of water in low-lying areas is possible. On Wednesday, expect downpours, fog, and localized flooding. Meteorologists predict 1.5-2 inches of rain in Accomack and Northampton Counties, with the “worst case scenario” potential for up to 3-4 inches.

Strong winds, particularly along the coast, may lead to coastal flooding and beach erosion during high tide. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for Tuesday night and Wednesday, with a south-southwest wind. Winds will increase to near-gale conditions on Wednesday night into Thursday as the cold front moves south and winds shift to the northwest. While not as low as last week, tides will remain below normal due to strong southwest winds. Low tides of 1 foot or less below mean low water are possible Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

Colder, drier air will follow the cold front Wednesday night, bringing a cooler and sunnier end to the week. Another system is expected to bring rain Saturday night into Sunday.
