State investigating fire that resulted in the death of a Greenbush man

On Sunday, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been requested by the Fire Chief of Onancock Volunteer Fire Department regarding a house fire that they had responded to at the 20000 block of Greenbush Road, Greenbush, Virginia. The request came in at approximately 3:08 PM, in which the house fire resulted in the fatality of one elderly male.

Special Agents are on scene and the incident is under investigation.

According to Mark Rydberg, Onancock Chief, the fire call came in at approximately 2:47pm for a fire alarm activation at a residence on Greenbush Road in Parksley. Several minutes later, Parksley, Bloxom, Tasley, Onancock, Melfa and Dept. of Public Safety personnel were dispatched to the same address as smoke was seen coming from the house. There were reports of someone possibly still in the home when units arrived on scene. An immediate rescue was made and the victim was treated with advanced life support however, the victim did not survive despite incredible efforts.

Identification and notification of next of kin has been made for the deceased male, 92 year old Melvin Manchester Shelton, who was the only occupant in the home at the time of the fire.
