Snow turning to ice in latest weekend weather forecast; Winter Storm Watch issued

The National Weather Service Wakefield has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Accomack and Northampton counties, warning that a potentially significant winter storm could affect the Eastern Shore beginning Saturday afternoon and lasting through Monday afternoon.

Forecasters say confidence is increasing that the region will see widespread winter precipitation, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain, though the exact mix and amounts remain uncertain. Officials caution that the combination of snow and ice could lead to hazardous travel conditions and widespread power outages, especially if ice accumulations are significant.

According to the National Weather Service, very cold Arctic air is expected to move into the Eastern Shore late Friday into Saturday, with temperatures dropping into the teens and lower 20s. Precipitation is expected to begin Saturday afternoon or evening, likely starting as snow before potentially changing to sleet or freezing rain as warmer air moves in above the surface. Coastal locations, including parts of the Eastern Shore, could also see periods of rain, depending on how the system evolves.

Forecasters note that while snow totals may be lower than earlier projections, the risk of ice accumulation is increasing, which could pose a greater threat to power lines, trees, and transportation infrastructure. Even moderate ice amounts can result in dangerous road conditions and extended power outages.

In addition to the storm itself, the National Weather Service is emphasizing concern about a prolonged period of extreme cold following the system. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing from Saturday through at least the middle of next week, with overnight lows potentially falling into the single digits, and possibly lower if significant snow or ice accumulates. Wind chills could drop below zero at times.

Emergency officials warn that the extended cold could be particularly dangerous for those without reliable heat or power, and residents are encouraged to prepare now by checking heating systems, stocking essential supplies, and reviewing cold-weather safety plans.
