Six childhood friends bring their community together at 6th Annual Onancock Community Day

Six lifelong friends turned childhood memories into community impact this past weekend by hosting the 6th Annual Onancock Community Day, an event dedicated to celebrating unity, giving back, and creating lasting memories for families from the Northeast Community in the Town of Onancock.

The event, titled “Bringing it Back Home,” was funded and organized by Javon Smith, Ronte Savage, Upshur Ayres, De’Ondre Walker, Shawn Miles, and Na’iym Topping, who all grew up together in Onancock.

Onancock Community Day has become an annual tradition that reflects their shared commitment to investing in the town that helped shape them. What began as a simple idea to reconnect neighbors has grown into a signature community celebration that brings together residents of all ages.

Held at the Historic Onancock School, this year’s event featured music from local DJs, complimentary food, family-friendly activities, games, a bounce house for children, and opportunities for neighbors to connect in a welcoming atmosphere.

More than 300 attendees gathered to celebrate the spirit of community while supporting an event built on hometown pride.

“Our goal has always been bigger than hosting an event,” the organizers said. “We wanted to create a space where families who grew up in Onancock could travel home and come together, children could have fun, and people could be reminded of what makes Onancock a special place to call home. Every year, seeing the smiles, laughter, and connections made throughout the day reminds us of why we started.”

As the organizers look ahead to next year, they said they remain committed to expanding Community Day while preserving the values that inspired it: unity, community service, hometown pride, and giving back to future generations.
