The Eastern Shore is officially under moderate drought conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.
Much of the state has experienced less than 5% of normal precipitation over the last 30 days. The Eastern Shore, in particular, has not seen any measurable rainfall in nearly six weeks.
Under moderate drought conditions, the risk of wildfires is elevated due to the lack of moisture. This also places stress on trees, landscapes, and even aquatic life.
The National Weather Service is requesting voluntary water conservation across the region.
The Eastern Shore last received measurable rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Helene, which brought about an inch of rain in late September. A slight chance of showers is forecast for this afternoon, but significant rainfall is not expected.
