The Eastern Shore experienced its largest snowfall since January 29, 2022 with accumulations exceeding six inches across much of the region. The highest total was reported in Townsend with 10.5 inches of dry, powdery snow, while Weirwood reported 10, Eastville & Cape Charles received 8.5 inches and Accomac & Wachapreague measured 6 inches. During the 2022 storm, as much as 8 inches fell across the region.
A&N Electric Cooperative reported only one major outage event overnight, when a downed wire affected Chincoteague Island. After that, there were only 3-4 more separate outage events that affected fewer than 20 co-op members each, said Jay Diem.
Though the heaviest snow has ended, an additional half-inch to one inch could fall between 7 AM and 1 PM today. The Winter Storm Warning has been canceled, but a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6:00 PM this evening. Rising winds this morning will create snowdrifts across roadways, making travel extremely dangerous during this evening’s and Thursday morning’s commutes. Temperatures will remain below freezing Thursday, dropping into the teens overnight with wind chills possibly reaching single digits.
A Cold Weather Advisory will be in effect from 10 PM tonight until 10 AM Friday for eastern and southeastern Virginia. Wind chills could drop as low as 5 degrees above zero. Health officials warn that these dangerous temperatures can cause frostbite and hypothermia on exposed skin. Anyone venturing outdoors should wear appropriate winter clothing, including hats and gloves.
Marine conditions will also be hazardous, with a Small Craft Advisory in effect through Thursday as north winds gust to 20-25 knots. Northwest gales are expected Thursday evening into early Friday morning, with freezing spray conditions developing Thursday night.
