As small hamlets took shape across the Eastern Shore, one of the first establishments to appear was often the general store. More than a place to buy staples, these stores served as the heartbeat of their communities stocking everything from dry goods to farm tools while doubling as gathering spots where neighbors exchanged news, shared stories and supported one another. In many towns, the general store was the thread that stitched daily life together.
For Eastern Shore native Barry Belle, that tradition has always held a special pull. Years ago, he dreamed of owning the Pungoteague Store, a landmark woven into the fabric of local memory. This past weekend Kelley visited with Barry Belle and Deborah Heath when that dream became reality as they celebrated the grand opening of Hometown Market & Deli in the former Pungoteague Store building.
With shelves full, doors wide open and community members greeted with smiles, Belle hopes to restore the store’s legacy as a place where people feel connected, welcomed and at home.
