Imagine a place where you can dance however you want—spin, sway or even move like a tree blowing in the wind. There’s no right or wrong way to move, and nobody is there to judge you. Ecstatic dance is like having a dance party where there are no rules!
It’s is a freeform style of movement where participants let go of structured steps and allow the music to guide their bodies. It’s often described as a meditative and liberating experience, helping people connect with their emotions.
The beauty of ecstatic dance is that it’s for everyone—no matter your age or mobility. You can adapt the movements to what feels comfortable and right for you, even if it’s as simple as moving your hands or tapping your feet.
The music is carefully chosen to encourage movement. People close their eyes, feel the rhythm, and just let their bodies do whatever feels good. It’s not about being perfect or learning steps. It’s about having fun, feeling free, and expressing yourself.
This week, Kelley visited with Amy Robertson who began Eastern Shore Dance Sanctuary in Nasawadox. As she reflected on her experiences, she spoke passionately about how ecstatic dance transformed her life in unexpected ways. This practice became more than just a form of movement—it became a sanctuary for healing, self-expression, and connection. Through the freedom of ecstatic dance, she discovered parts of herself that had been buried for decades.
Whether seeking creativity, healing, or simply a way to feel alive, ecstatic dance offers a transformative experience that celebrates individuality. It’s a joyful journey into movement, connection, and renewal—a practice that reminds us to embrace the rhythm of life.
(Sessions are usually held weekly upstairs in the former Masonic Lodge on Rogers Drive in Nasswadox. Visit Eastern Shore Dance Sanctuary on Facebook to see the schedule.
