Shore continuing to experience drought

Despite recent rains, drought conditions have persisted across the Eastern Shore, with Accomack County experiencing severe drought conditions and Northampton under moderate drought conditions. A Drought Information Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield highlights that the area has been severely impacted by below-normal rainfall, with streamflows and water levels continuing to decline. An extreme drought has been issued for areas of Maryland’s southern Eastern Shore.

As of this week, much of eastern Virginia, including the Eastern Shore, is facing at least moderate drought (D1) conditions. The NWS reports that well-below-normal precipitation over the past 30 days has contributed to the ongoing dry conditions, which are expected to persist through the winter months.

Fire Risk Increases with Above-Normal Wildfire Hazard

The dry conditions have also led to an above-normal wildfire risk for Accomack County and surrounding areas through the month of December. The combination of low humidity, dry vegetation, and high winds creates ideal conditions for wildfires, which can spread rapidly. Residents are urged to be cautious with any outdoor activities that could spark a fire.

Mitigation Efforts and State Actions

Virginia has issued a drought watch for much of eastern Virginia, including Accomack County. Local officials continue to monitor streamflows, water levels, and wildfire risks, while also implementing mitigation strategies to protect residents and resources.

Outlook: Dry Conditions Expected to Persist

The seven-day precipitation forecast indicates that while light rain is expected across parts of the region, it will not significantly improve drought conditions. Most areas are expected to receive less than half an inch of rain over the next week.

Looking ahead, meteorologists have forecasted below-normal precipitation through December, with dry conditions likely continuing throughout the winter. Cooler-than-average temperatures are also expected during this period.
