The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield has issued a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms across Accomack and Northampton counties for Sunday. Residents are urged to stay alert as damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and the potential for isolated tornadoes develop ahead of an approaching cold front.
Severe weather is expected to develop Sunday afternoon into Sunday night, bringing potential winds of 35-40 mph. Rainfall of 1 to 1.5 inches is forecasted. In addition, isolated tornadoes are possible, and strong winds may lead to spotty power outages and downed trees. While no official NWS alerts have been issued yet, officials warn that conditions could change rapidly. The severity of the storms will depend on how unstable the atmosphere becomes as the front moves in.
Strong winds will also impact marine conditions along the Eastern Shore, prompting Small Craft Advisories from Saturday night through Monday morning. Wind gusts up to 35 knots (40 mph) are expected Sunday afternoon and evening, with seas reaching up to 10 feet in the northern coastal waters and up to 5 feet in the Chesapeake Bay. Boaters and mariners are advised to stay off the water Sunday.
To prepare for the approaching storm, residents should secure outdoor objects, stay updated with the latest forecasts, and be ready for possible power outages. If a tornado warning is issued, take cover in a safe location. Motorists are reminded to avoid driving through flooded roads, as just a few inches of water can be dangerous.
