Several injured in Birdsnest shooting; suspect in custody

A shooting in Birdsnest early this morning left several people injured and prompted what Northampton County Sheriff David Doughty described as an active shooter situation.

According to the sheriff, the incident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Deputies responded to the scene and engaged the suspect upon arrival. The suspect is now in custody, and Sheriff Doughty said there is no longer an active threat to the community.

Several victims were transported to a hospital for treatment, according to the sheriff. The extent of their injuries was not immediately released.

Authorities are continuing to process several crime scenes connected to the incident. Sheriff Doughty said additional information will be released as the investigation progresses and the scenes are fully processed.
