According to a report on WAVY.com, seven Chincoteague ponies on Assateague have a disease called “swamp cancer”. Swamp cancer, not technically cancer, is caused by a fungus like organism which used to be incurable. But there’s a new treatment that is 80% effective. Chincoteague Fire Company spokeswoman Denise Bowden told the Daily Times that two ponies died from the disease last year.
The problem was discovered during the fall round up when the ponies receive vaccinations, are de-wormed and teeth and hoofs are checked. The fire company says it is working with top experts to treat the ponies.
