Aerospace Academy Ribbon Cutting

The Eastern Shore celebrated a major milestone in education and workforce development this week with the official opening of the Aerospace Academy of the Eastern Shore.

The new lab school, launched in partnership with Old Dominion University, Eastern Shore Community College, local public school systems, and the Virginia Spaceport Authority, will prepare students for careers in aviation, aerospace, and STEM fields. The program connects classroom learning with hands-on industry experience, offering students a pathway to future jobs in one of the fastest-growing sectors in the Commonwealth.

Governor Glenn Youngkin, Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera, Secretary of Transportation Shep Miller, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans and Delegate Rob Bloxom, and local leaders joined NASA Wallops officials, industry representatives, and educators for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event highlighted Virginia’s growing role in national aerospace initiatives, with Rocket Lab’s new Neutron rocket launch pad at Wallops serving as a backdrop to the day’s announcements.

NASA Wallops Director Dave Pierce underscored the importance of the Academy, calling it “a critical step toward developing the next generation of aerospace leaders.” He emphasized Wallops’ continued role in national defense, space exploration, and commercial spaceflight, noting that a skilled local workforce is essential to the future of both the region and the nation’s space program.

Governor Youngkin described the Academy as “a realization of Virginia’s vision to connect education with opportunity,” praising the collaboration among schools, universities, and industry partners. “Students here on the Shore will have the chance to study aerospace, design satellites, and even prepare for careers that may one day take them to the Moon or Mars,” Youngkin said.

Speakers stressed that the school will not only serve Eastern Shore students directly, but also act as a hub for designing innovative curriculum and training teachers across the state. The program emphasizes both manned and unmanned aviation, space science, and cybersecurity—fields with growing workforce demand.

Congresswoman Kiggans called the opening a “historic day” for the Shore, positioning the region as a training ground for the engineers, scientists, and pilots of tomorrow.

As Pierce told the students gathered for the ribbon cutting, “Work hard, dream big, and ask questions. Failure is just the beginning of discovery. The sky is not the limit—the future is yours.”
