U.S. Representative Jen Kiggans (VA-02) has been appointed to serve on the bipartisan and bicameral Congressional-Executive Commission on China for the 119th Congress, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson announced.
“I am honored to accept an appointment to the Congressional-Executive Commission on China,” said Kiggans. “I am grateful to Speaker Johnson and Chairman Chris Smith for this opportunity and will work diligently to fulfill the mandate of the Commission.”
The Commission, established by Congress in 2000, is charged with monitoring human rights and rule of law developments in the People’s Republic of China and reporting its findings annually to the President and Congress. It is composed of nine Senators, nine Members of the House of Representatives, and five senior Administration officials appointed by the President.
In her statement, Kiggans highlighted concerns over human rights abuses in China, including reports of forced labor, reeducation camps, and repression of minority groups such as Uyghurs and Falun Gong practitioners. She also emphasized the importance of encouraging businesses to evaluate their supply chains in light of human rights concerns.
Speaker Johnson praised Kiggans’ qualifications, stating, “As a former Naval aviator, a thought leader in Congress, and an experienced voice on the House Armed Services Committee, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans is well qualified to serve.”
Kiggans represents Virginia’s Second Congressional District, which includes the Eastern Shore as well as a large naval presence. She is a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and currently serves on the House Armed Services Committee.
