After two months of rehabilitation, a young bald eagle is set to return to the wild this afternoon at Kiptopeke State Park.

Bald Eagle #25-2450 was rescued in Norfolk on June 24 after being found grounded for more than a week with no parents nearby. Wildlife veterinarians determined the fledgling was underweight and suffering from subclinical lead poisoning. After treatment and weeks of flight conditioning, the eagle has been cleared for release.

The public is invited to witness the release today at 1 p.m. at Shelter Area One in Kiptopeke State Park. Staff from the Wildlife Center will give a short educational presentation before the eagle’s crate is opened and the bird takes flight.

The event is free and open to all. Parking directions will be provided by park staff upon arrival. Organizers note the release will take place rain or shine, though lightning or severe weather may cause delays.
