The Eastern Shore received more than 1.5 inches of rain Monday, with totals reaching 1.75 inches in Northampton County. The year-to-date rainfall is now approximately 14.3 inches.
Although the National Weather Service continues to classify Accomack County as abnormally dry, recent rainfall over the past month has resulted in full ditches and standing water across the region. One short-term benefit of the rain is a temporary reduction in pine pollen levels and irrigation ponds have returned to normally levels. However, the pollen season is not over, and heavy pollen is expected to return in the coming days.
Despite the summer-like temperatures enjoyed over the weekend, a Freeze Warning has been issued for much of Accomack County for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Temperatures in Maryland’s Dorchester, Inland Worcester, Maryland Beaches, Somerset, and Wicomico counties—as well as inland areas of Accomack County—are expected to dip into the upper 20s.
Frost and freezing conditions could damage crops and other sensitive plants. Residents are advised to take precautions now to protect vulnerable vegetation, especially in areas farther from the water where frost is more likely to occur.
