Rabid raccoon confirmed in Hallwood

The Eastern Shore Health District is advising residents in the Hallwood area after a raccoon found near Lankford Highway tested positive for rabies.

Health officials said the rabid raccoon was identified on June 1, 2026. At this time, there are no known exposures involving humans or domestic animals connected to the incident.

Anyone who may have come into contact with the raccoon is urged to contact the Eastern Shore Health District at 757-787-5880. Officials said exposure may include a bite, scratch, or contact with the animal’s saliva through an open wound or through the eyes, nose or mouth.

Pet owners are also encouraged to call if their pet had direct contact with the raccoon or was found near the animal.

Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system and is almost always fatal if left untreated. Health officials noted that rabies can be prevented in pets through vaccination and reminded residents that Virginia law requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated against the disease.

The health district urged residents to avoid contact with wild animals, especially raccoons, bats, foxes and skunks, and to avoid feeding stray animals. Officials also advised pet owners to feed pets indoors, keep pets from roaming freely and ensure vaccinations are current.

Residents are also encouraged to teach children not to approach unfamiliar animals and to avoid handling sick, injured or dead wildlife. Anyone encountering a wild animal that appears ill or injured should contact the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.

Officials also recommended keeping trash cans tightly sealed and blocking openings around homes, including attics, porches and chimneys, to help prevent wildlife from entering residential areas.
