The public now has a chance to weigh in on the future of one of the nation’s most iconic watersheds. The Chesapeake Bay Program has opened a two-month public comment period on its draft revised Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement—available from July 1 through September 1, 2025.
The original agreement, signed in 2014 by leaders from six states, Washington D.C., and the federal government, outlined goals for restoring the Bay’s health. But with a 2025 deadline approaching—and many goals still unmet—leaders say it’s time for an update.
The revised agreement streamlines the original 10 goals into four main priorities: Thriving Habitats and Wildlife, Clean Water, Healthy Landscapes, and Engaged Communities. The number of specific outcomes has also been trimmed from 31 to 21, each with measurable targets.
EPA Acting Director Lee McDonnell says the changes are grounded in science but remain realistic and achievable. Officials hope the new framework will guide restoration efforts beyond 2025.
Public feedback can be submitted via email at comments@chesapeakebay.net, and several webinars are scheduled throughout July to explain the changes and answer questions.
