Accomack County EMS Director C. Ray Pruitt asked Virginia EMS officials Thursday afternoon to remove the county from the mandatory evacuation requirement. Pruitt said that as of 5 p.m. he hadn’t heard any response.   The request came in a conference call with state officials.

Wednesday night, the evacuation center at Arcadia had six people, all from the same family.   Nandua Middle School had one individual. The decision was made to close both Arcadia and Nandua Middle School.   Nandua High School remains open. As of 5 p.m. Thursday, there were 35 people at Nandua High including one labor crew.

Pruitt said that until the evacuation order is lifted Nandua High will remain open and that anyone from Northampton who wishes to come to a shelter is welcome at Nandua High.

Even though Florence has turned south and will have a minimal effect on Eastern Shore weather, there are still closings and delays for county offices and some businesses.

Meanwhile Chincoteague EMS Director Brian Rush told WESR Thursday afternoon that the town has rescinded the evacuation order and that visitors are welcome to come to the island.
