A presumptive positive case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been identified on a farm on a local poultry farm, prompting the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) to urge poultry producers and backyard flock owners to implement strict biosecurity measures. The virus, which spreads rapidly through nasal and eye secretions and manure, poses a significant threat to poultry, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, as well as certain wild bird species like geese and shorebirds. It can be transmitted between flocks via infected birds, contaminated equipment, and the clothing or shoes of caretakers.

VDACS advises producers to report any unusual mortality or signs of disease immediately by calling 540-209-9120. It is crucial to keep flocks away from ponds and wild waterfowl, as these can carry diseases like HPAI. Poultry handlers should use dedicated footwear and clothing for their work, and footbaths are recommended at poultry housing entrances. Additionally, visiting other poultry farms should be avoided to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to assess the risk of HPAI to the general public as low. However, individuals with close contact to infected birds are encouraged to take precautions, including using appropriate personal protective equipment. For commercial producers, company protocols should be followed in the event of disease detection. Backyard flock owners noticing signs of illness or increased mortality are advised to contact VDACS and provide details about their flock while ensuring sick or dead birds are not moved off-site.

With HPAI circulating heavily in the environment, VDACS emphasizes the importance of vigilance and adherence to biosecurity practices to safeguard poultry operations. For additional information on biosecurity measures or HPAI, contact VDACS at 540-209-9120.
