Potentially dangerous heat returns to Shore Wednesday

Hot weather is expected to return to the Eastern Shore on Wednesday and intensify Thursday, with potentially dangerous heat continuing into Friday.

Temperatures are forecast to climb into the lower to mid-90s Wednesday as a strong ridge of high pressure builds across the region.

Heat index values are expected to rise into the lower 100s Wednesday. Conditions could approach Heat Advisory criteria Thursday and possibly Friday as temperatures and humidity increase.

Dry weather is expected to continue through Friday, with little chance of thunderstorms during the hottest portion of the week.

The weather pattern is expected to change gradually over the weekend as a front approaches from the north. Thunderstorm chances will begin increasing Saturday and are expected to spread across the Eastern Shore Sunday and Monday.

Forecasters said there remains uncertainty about the exact timing and coverage of the weekend storms. However, some thunderstorms could become strong, with localized damaging wind gusts as the primary threat.

Residents working or spending time outdoors Wednesday through Friday should take precautions against heat-related illness, including drinking plenty of water, limiting strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and checking on children, older adults and others who may be especially vulnerable.
