Thousands of spectators lined the shores of Assateague Channel Wednesday morning to watch the 93rd annual Chincoteague Pony Swim. The ponies made the trek from Assateague Island to the mainland at approximately 8:30 a.m.
The Chincoteague Ponies official veterinarian and native Chincoteaguer Charlie Cameron with Eastern Shore Animal Hospital talks about the state of the herd and how the swim went yesterday:
The ponies then were herded to the carnival grounds where they were corralled. They were examined by veterinarians in preparation for Thursday’s auction which gets underway at the carnival grounds beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Friday morning the remaining heard and those ponies that were purchased and donated back to the fire company will swim back across the channel for another year of freedom on Assateague.
