Judge Lynwood W. Lewis Jr. accepted a plea agreement Thursday in Accomack Circuit Court that called for a Greenbush man to be sentenced to six decades in prison for three counts of aggravated sexual battery involving two girls younger than 13 years old.
The agreement between the defendant, 36-year-old Alvin Zachariah Bynum, and Commonwealth’s Attorney Spencer Morgan included a cap of eight years of active time for the defendant to serve. The terms are scheduled to be argued at sentencing on May 29, 2025. A psychosexual evaluation and a long-form presentence report were ordered. Bynum will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Bynum was initially charged with two counts of aggravated sexual battery and a count of rape. He had asked for juries to determine his fate. In the agreement, the rape charge was reduced to another count of battery. The incidents occurred in 2019 and 2022.
Some information about the cases was withheld from this story to protect the children’s identities.
Morgan said he offered the agreement because the victims were apprehensive about testifying and he didn’t want there to be any chance of Bynum being acquitted.
