The Onancock Town Council has decided not to move forward with a Virginia Department of Transportation grant that would have funded the installation of eight new crosswalks in town.

The council voted Monday night to reject the proposal after concerns were raised over the project’s cost and whether the crosswalks were necessary.

Under the grant, the town would have been responsible for 20 percent of the cost—about $50,000 for each crosswalk—while VDOT would have covered the remaining 80 percent. The total project was estimated at approximately $2 million, or about $250,000 per crosswalk.

Instead of accepting the grant, council members directed Town Manager Wesley Wootten and town staff to explore other crosswalk options and return with recommendations by the end of the year.
