Onancock resident wins top sailing award

Lindsey Kaufmann, an Onancock resident who taught sailing at the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club this summer, competed in the Hampton One Design Class this summer and earned top recognition at season’s end.

Kaufmann competed in six regattas and demonstrated exceptional skill as crew for Blake Goodwin throughout the season. She was awarded the William J. Daugherty Memorial Trophy and recognized as the best crew of the year for her efforts. In the Hampton One Design National Championship, Kauffman and Blake Godwin finished fourth. Although there are no professional sailors in the class, the competitors are highly skilled.

Kaufmann. 20, competes for Old Dominion University in both the Women’s and Open Regatta’s and Fleet and Team racing for ODU. She also serves on the board for the Intercollegiate College Sailing Association.

She has helped lead ODU’s sailing program to a top 10 finish in the nation during her two years there.
