Onancock Main Street receives $50,000 investment grant

Onancock Main Street (OMS) has been awarded a $50,000 Downtown Investment Grant from the Virginia Main Street program, Governor Glenn Youngkin announced Friday. The funding will support OMS’s “Retain, Recruit, Revitalize” initiative, which aims to strengthen Onancock’s downtown business district and boost long-term economic activity.

The project includes several components designed to enhance the area’s appeal for businesses, residents, and tourists. OMS will distribute grants to downtown businesses for public-facing exterior improvements and offer educational programs focused on topics such as foot traffic and visual marketing. The organization also plans to work with design consultants and business owners to enhance vacant storefronts through upgraded window displays. Additionally, the initiative includes implementation of the “Open for Business” plan, which focuses on recruiting new businesses, supporting existing ones, and encouraging capital investment and job growth.

“This funded project aligns with OMS’ strategic plan and the Town’s Comprehensive Plan,” said OMS President Lisa Fiege. “We’re thrilled to have this financial support to help our businesses and downtown district thrive.” She also thanked Virginia Main Street, the Town of Onancock for providing a grant match, and other local partners for their support.

OMS is a nonprofit, volunteer-led organization committed to revitalizing Onancock’s historic downtown. The group has led projects such as mural installations, tourism marketing campaigns, façade design services, and efforts to repurpose vacant commercial properties.
