Onancock residents and business owners are invited to attend a free session to learn about the Onancock Main Street Initiative on Thursday, March 8, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Market Street United Methodist Church, 75 Market Street.
Kyle Meyer, community revitalization specialist with the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, is the key speaker.
Main Street USA is a national program working with more than 2000 rural and urban communities. The program aims to revitalize historic downtowns through specific criteria and preservation-based, community-driven, grassroots strategies, based on its success with other communities. The Virginia Main Street Program follows the Main Street USA approach and offers a range of services and assistance to communities interested in revitalizing their historic commercial districts.
Downtown revitalization strategies are generated through community engagement and analysis of town data. Input from residents and business owners of Onancock is critical to create a town-wide vision.
Towns must meet eligibility criteria and apply through a competitive application process to ultimately be designated as a Main Street location. Onancock is an “affiliate” of the program. Affiliate status is for communities that are exploring downtown revitalization, that are preparing for designation or that may not be eligible for designation. It provides access to all Virginia Main Street training and limited on-site assistance, as resources permit.
