NWS updates snowfall predictions

The National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Accomack and Northampton counties, effective from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning. The storm is expected to produce local snowfall, with latest forecasts predicting 3-4 inches in northern Accomack County, 2-3 in central Accomack, 1-2 in lower Accomack and less than an inch in Northampton. Residents should prepare for hazardous conditions as the storm progresses, impacting travel and daily activities.

Snowfall is projected to begin around 10 AM Tuesday morning and continue throughout the day before transitioning into a wintry mix and eventually rain by Wednesday morning. With temperatures near freezing, there is an increased risk of sleet and freezing rain developing overnight. This transition could lead to icy roadways, making travel dangerous, especially on untreated surfaces and bridges.

Residents are urged to monitor updates from local officials and the National Weather Service. Those who must travel should use extreme caution and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Power disruptions remain a possibility, so having emergency supplies and an alternative heat source is advised.

A prolonged period of unsettled weather continues through the week. Total precipitation of 1.5-2.5 inches are expected across the area through 7 AM EST Thursday. Additional precipitation is expected on Thursday.
