The National Weather Service is urging residents of Accomack and Northampton counties to closely monitor changing conditions this weekend and into next week, as a mix of rain, snow, and bitter cold temperatures could impact the Eastern Shore.

According to a weekly impact weather briefing issued Friday afternoon by the National Weather Service office in Wakefield, temperatures are expected to moderate briefly today, though there remains a chance for light rain early in the day. Conditions are expected to turn colder again by Sunday as a fast-moving low-pressure system tracks offshore.

Forecasters say wintry precipitation remains possible Sunday across the Eastern Shore, including Accomack and Northampton counties. Current trends favor a drier system, with precipitation likely beginning as rain or a rain-snow mix before changing over to snow. The best chance for light snowfall accumulation appears to be away from the immediate coastline. Currently Accomack County is predicted to see roughly an inch with less in Northampton, though there is still uncertainty depending on the storm’s strength and track. If the system intensifies more than expected, some areas could see one to three inches of snow, particularly later Sunday and into the evening when temperatures drop below freezing.

Any snowfall is expected to be inefficient during the daytime due to marginal temperatures, but accumulations on secondary roads and bridges could become possible Sunday evening and overnight. The National Weather Service noted that temperatures are expected to fall below freezing around 6 p.m. Sunday.

Looking ahead to early next week, forecasters are confident that another surge of Arctic air will move into the region. Monday through Wednesday are expected to be cold and dry, with well below-normal temperatures. Wind chills could fall into the single digits and low teens by Tuesday morning, posing a risk for anyone spending extended time outdoors.

Marine conditions may also deteriorate. Small Craft Advisory conditions are expected at times through the weekend and again early next week, which could impact commercial and recreational boating activities along the Eastern Shore.
