Residents of Accomack and Northampton Counties in Virginia should prepare for potential snowfall beginning tonight and continuing into early Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect, with forecasted snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches, with higher totals possible closer to the coast. Northampton is expected to get more snowfall than Accomack. The advisory is expected to remain active until 7:00 AM EST on Wednesday. The NWS says this will be a very dry, fluffy snow with peak rates of up to 1”/hour. The most likely timing for peak snowfall rate is between 9 PM and 3 AM.
Snowfall could lead to slippery road conditions, potentially affecting both Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. Residents are advised to slow down and exercise caution while traveling during this period. The snowfall coincides with an ongoing arctic air mass that will keep daytime highs in the 20s and overnight lows in the single digits to mid-teens. Wind chills could dip near or below zero, creating dangerously cold conditions. Residents are urged to dress in layers and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

Additionally, hazardous marine conditions are expected. A Freezing Spray Advisory remains in effect through Wednesday morning for local waters north of the Virginia-North Carolina border. Mariners should anticipate light to moderate freezing spray, which could create perilous conditions. Small Craft Advisories may also be issued for Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
The National Weather Service advises residents to stay informed by monitoring local forecasts and preparing for the risks posed by snowfall and frigid temperatures in the coming days. Proper precautions can help mitigate the impacts of this winter weather event.
