Local emergency officials have issued a local State of Emergency in advance of today’s storm.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield’s latest update predicts a storm is expected to bring 6-8 inches of snow to Accomack and 8-12 inches for Northampton, with locally higher amounts possible in some areas. The heaviest snowfall is forecast this afternoon and tonight, with temperatures dropping into the 20s overnight.
The system may also bring sleet and freezing rain, particularly to southeastern Virginia, increasing the risk of power outages from downed trees and power lines. Travel conditions will be dangerous throughout the event, with snow-covered and slippery roads likely affecting tonight and tomorrow morning’s commute periods. Officials strongly advise against unnecessary travel during the storm.
Residents should prepare for potential power disruptions by checking heating systems and ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. Those who must travel should keep emergency supplies in their vehicles, including flashlights, food, water, and extra warm clothing.
Cold temperatures and breezy conditions will remain following the storm, meaning the melt will be slow and there will be drifting of snow in areas with openings to the north and northwest. Travel will continue to be very dangerous through the week.
