A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Accomack and Northampton counties through 9 a.m. Tuesday, with the National Weather Service warning that areas of black ice are likely across the Eastern Shore following Monday’s wintry precipitation.

Forecasters say temperatures dropped below freezing overnight, allowing moisture on roads, sidewalks, and elevated surfaces to refreeze. As a result, bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads in both counties may be slick and hazardous during the morning commute.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use caution, especially on rural stretches of Route 13, back roads, and shaded areas that may not have dried before temperatures fell. Pedestrians are also advised to take care on steps, driveways, and walkways, where thin, nearly invisible ice could lead to slips and falls.

Residents seeking updated road conditions can call 511 Virginia or check the state’s online travel resources. Conditions are expected to improve later in the morning as temperatures rise.
