The National Weather Service says forecast confidence has increased for a significant winter storm expected to affect Virginia’s Eastern Shore this weekend, with recent updates adding stronger wind concerns, expanded blizzard wording along the coast, and new cold weather alerts for Accomack and Northampton counties.

In its latest Winter Storm Briefing issued Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service in Wakefield indicated higher snowfall potential for Northampton County, with totals of up to 7 inches possible. Around 5 inches of snow is currently forecast for Accomack County, based on the latest information. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect Thursday night for portions of the Eastern Shore, and an Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for Saturday night as dangerously low wind chills are expected.

Forecasters say a strong low-pressure system is expected to develop off the southeast coast late Friday into Saturday and intensify through Sunday morning. The storm could bring accumulating snow to the Eastern Shore beginning Friday afternoon, with the most significant impacts expected Saturday night into Sunday. The National Weather Service says blizzard-like conditions are possible Saturday evening in lower Northampton County. A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect, signaling the potential for hazardous conditions.

Strong winds are now a growing concern, particularly along coastal areas. The National Weather Service warns that heavy snow combined with gusty winds could lead to periods of near-blizzard conditions, including reduced visibility from blowing and drifting snow.

Snowfall amounts remain uncertain, and meteorologists stress that small shifts in the storm’s track could lead to notable differences in accumulation across the Eastern Shore. Even modest snowfall could be amplified by high winds and prolonged subfreezing temperatures, keeping roads snow-covered and icy for an extended period.

Bitter cold is expected to linger after the storm moves out. Wind chills may fall into the single digits or below zero at times over the weekend, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite and slowing snow and ice removal efforts. An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect for Sunday morning for the Shore.

Marine conditions are also expected to worsen, with storm watches in effect for nearby coastal waters. Strong winds, high seas, and freezing spray could create hazardous conditions for mariners and impact access to coastal areas.

Residents in Accomack and Northampton counties are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts, prepare for possible power outages, and avoid unnecessary travel during the height of the storm. The National Weather Service is expected to issue its next briefing Friday morning as confidence in storm details continues to improve.
