The Northampton Board of Supervisors will no longer lease school buses for its public schools.

At Monday evening’s work session, County Finance Director John Chandler presented a budget amendment to the Board for $419,978 to fund three new school buses and 24 new smart boards. Chandler informed the board the time to renew the lease agreement and presented the case to stop leasing and begin purchasing their own buses. According to Superintendent Eddie Lawrence, a new school bus would cost approximately $95,000.

The County would save on interest and other associated leasing fees by buying their own. Chandler anticipated the savings to be approximately $40,000 a year.

The Board passed the budget amendment, which included stopping the lease agreement, unanimously.
