Northampton Supervisors oppose offshore mineral leasing without further study

The Northampton County Board of Supervisors has adopted a resolution opposing the proposed commercial leasing of Outer Continental Shelf minerals off the coast of Virginia unless extensive scientific, environmental and economic studies show the activity would pose no unacceptable risk to the county.

The resolution, adopted July 14, comes as the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management seeks information and public input on the possibility of leasing offshore areas for mineral development.

County officials noted that the federal request is an early step in the process and does not represent a final leasing decision.

The resolution states that Northampton County’s economy, heritage and quality of life are closely connected to its coastal resources, commercial and recreational fisheries, tourism, agriculture and maritime industries.

Supervisors said any activity that could affect those resources requires careful scientific review, meaningful public participation and consideration of potential long-term environmental and economic consequences.

Under the resolution, the board opposes commercial mineral leasing unless comprehensive analyses demonstrate that the activity would not create unacceptable risks for Northampton County, its residents, economy or natural resources.

The board also encouraged residents, businesses, watermen, conservation organizations and other interested parties to participate in BOEM’s public comment process.

Copies of the resolution will be sent to the governor, Northampton County’s state legislative delegation, Virginia’s congressional delegation, BOEM, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission and other appropriate agencies.
