Northampton County Public Schools officials say they are closely monitoring the potential impact of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on March 20, 2025, which directs the closure of the U.S. Department of Education and shifts educational authority to the states.

While the long-term implications of the decision remain unclear, district leaders are awaiting further guidance from federal and state agencies regarding changes to education funding, programs, and policy. Superintendent Dr. Lisa Martin released a statement assuring the public that the district remains committed to its mission despite uncertainty.

“What we do know, without question, is this: NCPS remains committed to educating, supporting, and empowering every student,” said Dr. Martin. “No matter how policy shifts at the federal level, our purpose remains the same.”

The executive order has raised questions nationwide about the future of federally supported education programs and the mechanisms states will use to absorb the responsibilities previously managed at the federal level. Dr. Martin acknowledged that the transition may present challenges, but emphasized the district’s readiness to adapt and its ongoing focus on providing a quality education for all students.

As the state and federal governments begin to roll out details of the new framework, NCPS officials have pledged transparency and open communication with families and the broader community.

“Together, we are the anchor in these shifting tides, steadfast in our mission to provide the best education for our students,” Dr. Martin said.

On March 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order directing the closure of the U.S. Department of Education, shifting authority over public education to individual state communities. We understand that this news raises questions; currently, we do not have all the answers.

At Northampton County Public Schools, we are watching these developments closely. The impact of the transition remains unclear regarding the programs, funding, and resources that help us serve our students each day. We await further guidance from the Federal Government, the U.S. Department of Education, and the Virginia Department of Education regarding the rollout of this executive order and its potential effects on funding allocations and policy. What we do know, without question, is this: NCPS remains committed to educating, supporting, and empowering every student.

No matter how the policy shifts at the Federal level, our purpose remains the same. We remain adamant in our commitment to academic excellence and opportunity for all. We acknowledge that the closure may present challenges, but we are prepared to face them. As more details emerge, we will communicate openly and honestly with our community. Jointly, we will navigate whatever lies ahead, ensuring that the students of Northampton County receive the quality education they deserve.

Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to our schools. Together, we are the anchor in these shifting tides, steadfast in our mission to provide the best education for our students.

Sincerely,
