Northampton students participate in Distracted Driving Simulation Day

Approximately 120 students from Northampton High School and Broadwater Academy took part in a hands-on distracted driving simulation event Tuesday, gaining a sobering look at the real-world consequences of unsafe decisions behind the wheel.

The program, hosted at the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, brought together law enforcement, emergency responders, and community partners to demonstrate the dangers of distracted and impaired driving.

Throughout the day, students rotated through a series of interactive stations designed to mirror real-life scenarios. Deputies with the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office conducted mock traffic stops, including a K-9 demonstration featuring Officer Blu and Blitz.

“I think it’s been really informative. We just got done with the bomb and drug dog, it was really interesting,” said Broadwater Academy sophomore Tommy Ertle.

Troopers with Virginia State Police led distracted and impaired driving exercises using specialized equipment, including a modified golf cart and a four-wheeled pedal bike. Officers from the Exmore and Cape Charles Police Departments guided students through exercises using fatal vision goggles to simulate impairment.

Additional demonstrations were provided by Eastville Police and Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Police, focusing on speeding enforcement and crash response. Representatives from Virginia Tech also discussed the importance of safely sharing the road with large trucks.

Students heard firsthand about the legal consequences of dangerous driving decisions from Northampton County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Services staff. Members of the Virginia State Police Motor Vehicle Crash Reconstruction Team presented details from serious crashes linked to distraction and impairment.

Emergency responders from Nassawadox Volunteer Fire Company and Northampton County Emergency Services showcased their equipment and explained how they respond to crashes. A Nightingale helicopter, assisted by the Cheriton Volunteer Fire Company, was also on site for students to explore.

The event concluded with a mock crash scene and mock trial, giving students a full picture of how a single poor decision can impact not only those involved, but families, first responders, and the broader community. The Eastville Volunteer Fire Department assisted with the demo and performed the extraction work.

“The goal of the event was to create a lasting impression on young drivers and reinforce the importance of staying focused and making responsible choices behind the wheel,” said Sheriff Doughty. “I’m really hoping the event will catch on in other jurisdictions. The object is to save lives and prevent tragedies.”

Sheriff Doughty thanked Deadrise Pies and Buttercups for donating food for all who attended and KC Auto Sales for donating the vehicle used for the mock accident.
