The Northampton County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution at Tuesday night’s Board Meeting honoring Donald “Donnie” E. Kellam Jr., recognizing his 47-year dedication to fire and emergency medical services on the Eastern Shore. Kellam, who passed away on January 5, 2025, was remembered for his leadership and selfless service to the community.
Kellam’s service began in 1977 as a volunteer with the Community Fire Company in Exmore, where he later served many years as Vice President. His commitment to firefighter safety led him to help establish the Eastern Shore Regional Fire Training Center, enhancing preparation for the region’s first responders.
Beyond firefighting, Kellam was instrumental in emergency communications. He served on the Eastern Shore of Virginia 9-1-1 Commission since its creation in 1990, becoming Chairman in 2001 and serving in that role until his passing. He also worked to improve emergency response as a longtime member of the Northampton County Fire and Rescue Commission.
The resolution of Appreciation for Kellam acknowledged the thousands of hours he devoted to protecting county residents. Kellam’s family, including his son and grandsons, were on hand to accept a copy of the resolution.
“He was always pleasant, always had something good to say,” said Supervisor Ernest Smith of Kellam. “He will be missed.”
