The Northampton County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) participated in the 2025 National Historical Marker Weekend, held April 25 to 27, by cleaning markers in Eastville, Machipongo, and Belle Haven, Virginia. Historical Marker Weekend was created by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. People everywhere enjoy historical markers and signage, from roadsides and parks to historic sites. According to The Historical Marker Database, there’s more than 210,000 markers in the United States, but many have not received cleaning or care for years. National Historic Marker Weekend is a celebration that brings people and communities together to learn about local history while cleaning markers.
DAR members Page Beary, Cara Burton, Regent Kathy Lehman, and Vice-Regent Julie Badger used soft-bristled brushes and dishsoap to hand-clean the Courthouse Green interpretive sign and the “Northampton County High School” and the “Occohannock Indians” Virginia Department of Historic Resources highway markers.
