The Northampton County YMCA on the Eastern Shore of Virginia opens May 29th with Congresswoman Elaine Luria joining local officials, volunteers and donors to officially open the Y to the community with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house.

Partners, donors and the Y came together around the shared commitment to bring the Northampton community equitable access to safe youth programs, support for aging adults, swim safety, and healthy living programs. This new Y will open fully funded thanks to the hard work of stakeholders throughout the community. With 40 key donors and $4.7 million raised, fundraising efforts for the Northampton County YMCA made it the fastest, most widely supported capital campaign in the YMCA of South Hampton Roads’ history. The project, from the groundbreaking in August of 2020 to opening day this May, took just nine months to complete.

Members of this new Y location can look forward to two outdoor pools, a facility fully equipped with cardio and weight training equipment, programs for kids and the older adult community, group fitness classes, and even free childcare for up to two hours each day while parents workout at the Y. For those seeking an extra flexible routine that includes the Y, not only will membership to the Northampton County YMCA give you access to the Virtual Y with on-demand fitness and fun family activities, but this Y will open with a 24-hour access option for members.

The Y says that these options, the availability for financial assistance to those who may need it, and the ability for you to interact with the Y and make them a part of your daily routine even virtually, is in alignment with their goal to create equitable access to the resources the community needs to thrive.

“Access to safe childcare, healthy living programs and activities where families and individuals can come together to become their best selves is how we all get stronger together, and the Y is proud to be a catalyst for that togetherness and more, a place that anyone can call home,” said Anthony Walters, President and CEO for the YMCA of South Hampton Roads. He continued, “the Northampton County YMCA is an exciting new opportunity for this community to experience the positive outcomes from the resources that will now be right in their backyard, and the Y is honored to be the harbinger of great things to come.”

The ribbon cutting is scheduled for May 29 from 11—11:30am, directly followed by a first look and open house until 5pm, which will include refreshments and tours of the new Y location. May 29 will also be the final day for Charter Membership registrations, a pre-opening membership option that comes with no joining fee and additional perks like a goody bag and special member recognition events. All are welcome to attend and kick off the holiday weekend with the Y.

Just a short distance from Cape Charles’ main street, the Northampton County YMCA is the YMCA of South Hampton Roads 22nd location and third on the Eastern Shore.
