Accomack County Circuit Court C

By Linda Cicoira

It was no surprise Thursday when a repeat offender from Melfa, who insisted on a hearing in Accomack Circuit Court, was denied bond.

Devonte Lashawn Davis is 31-years-old. His attire is a white jailhouse jumpsuit. At times, he has chains around his ankles. He is awaiting sentencing for stealing a credit card in Northampton. He was indicted in Accomack for distribution of fentanyl, cocaine, and up to five pounds of marijuana. Authorities say more decisions regarding him are to come from an upcoming grand jury.

Twelve years ago, Davis, of Airport Drive, was given a big break when a charge of murder made against him wasn’t prosecuted even though he was in the car when another street gang member shot out the window killing a father of four who was waiting for a ride to work. He pleaded guilty to attempted robbery instead and was given a 10-year-suspended sentence.

Davis said he needed to get back to his job at Perdue so he could help support his two children.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney William Fox told the court about Davis’ prior record as a juvenile for burglary and felony theft, and a conviction of assault and battery by a mob. He was also found guilty in Virginia Beach of felony drug possession.

Judge Lynwood W. Lewis Jr. had an easy decision.

“Given the lengthy prior criminal history” and “His being denied bond by this court recently (for) distribution of a very deadly substance, I can’t in good conscience give him bond,” Judge Lewis said. “He poses a threat to the community.”
